La Recoleta Cemetery | Buenos Aires

Cementerio de la Recoleta in Buenos Aires

Is it strange to have a public graveyard in one of the poshest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires? Not if you're within the Recoleta Cemetery.

Originally established back in 1822, it was last updated in 1881. La Recoleta Cemetery is where the most famous Argentinians are laid to rest.

This includes their most famous inhabitant, Eva Perón. Perón was the first lady to Juan Perón, President of Argentina. Eva championed labor right and women’s suffrage which led to an eventual political career. Tragically, Eva died from cancer at the young age of 33. Many still believe in Eva’s spirit in Argentina and carry her sense of will with pride.

Getting Around La Recoleta

The cemetery acts as a maze and it’s quite easy to get lost trying to find the different names on whichever list you choose to go from. We chose a leisurely walk of being surprised and awestruck by the statues, tiny Gothic chapels, and mausoleums all within the classic architectural styles of Art-Deco, Art Nouveau, and Baroque.

Besides the architecture, one of my favorite aspects of this graveyard is the recognition literature writers received with respect to the other famous politicians and war heroes. Poets, writers, and journalists all made it in.
